Who is Citizens Advice
Citizens Advice are a local independent charity and a Company Limited by Guarantee and they are a member of the national Citizens Advice service. They were established in 1964 and support people living in the borough of Barnsley. They aim to provide the advice people need for the problems they face and they seek to improve the policies and practices that affect people’s lives by influencing social policy both locally and nationally. They provide advice and information on a wide range of issues from their town centre premises and also at a range of other locations throughout the borough – including Mapplewell.
Their service is free, confidential, independent and impartial. They will listen to your problem, explain all the options available to you and, where appropriate, support you with the course of action you decide to take. They will not judge you or tell you what you should do. They value diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination in all that they do. They respond to an individual’s needs without regard to their age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, race or religion.

When they record and use your personal information they:
- only access it when they have good reason

Their staff and volunteers
They have 24 full time equivalent paid staff and 22 volunteers who carry out a wide range of roles. The value of the work done by volunteers each year is estimated as worth more than £200,000. More than 50% of volunteers who leave each year do so to move into paid employment or full time study. Their trustee board has 8 members who bring with them different areas of expertise, and play a strategic role in organisational oversight and development. The trustee board is supported in its role by their management team, led by the Chief Executive.
Their funding
In 2018 – 19 they received core funding from Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council which was supplemented by project; contract; and grant funding from a number of other sources. For every £1 they receive from Barnsley Council they procured an average of £12.23 from other sources to enable them to provide additional services to clients.
Partnership Working
In the last year they have worked with: Age UK Barnsley, Area Councils and Ward Alliances, Berneslai Homes, BMBC, DIAL Barnsley, The Community Shop, Henry Smith, Money Advice Service, Pensionwise, other local Citizens Advice and many more. Working with other organisations helps them support the people of Barnsley. They are now a Third Party Reporting Centre for Hate Crime, more information can be found on their ‘Get Advice’ page.
