The memorial was originally put in place to commemorate the fallen from the Great War 14/18, but additional parts were subsequently added after the Second World War which raised the height of the overall pillar.

The memorial has been renovated by Barnsley Council in the last two years. In 2012  a wooden frame was made on which the wreaths are positioned each remembrance day and they are locked in place all year round and removed by the Council the following October.

Council workmen also tidy the surrounding site ready for the remembrance service. The remembrance service held every year is conducted by local clergy from both Methodist and Anglican churches in the joint villages of Mapplewell and Staincross.

A long standing member of the Royal British Legion lays the wreath for the Legion and read the Exhortation.

The memorial service is always well attended.
